View Full Version : Dyno Day

Time to start getting a feel for how many members are interested in putting their cars on the dyno. It's a fun event, usually costs about $30 for a run, followed by pizza at the Clover Leaf Tav in Tacoma. The date probably would be the last Saturday in March. Haven't contacted Doug yet. Seems that last year we had about 10 cars. The day usually starts with breakfast, then a short caravan to Fairlady Motors in University Place (actually west Tacoma, but don't tell the inhabitants that). First car on about 0900. Any takers?

C'mon folks--I need to know if there is any interest in this event. Get off your collective buttocks.

Jerry, I've got one cheek raised in that I haven't modified the '63 since last years dyno day.Who needs more than 37 HP? I don't plan on running, just hope to show up as an observer/pizza eater. Don

Don't forget that last years dyno day also included a jaunt through Point Defiance Park and an only slightly more spirited drive up to Seattle via Marine View Drive after the pizza.

Probably better add my name to the list. Haven't had a chance to get the right needles in Graham but I'm eager to see what the 1133cc motor will do. You can lower that cheek now, Don.

OK, that's more like it. Response. That makes three so far. I'm sure that Peter will want to run the 1360 Inno.

Just talked to Doug at Fairlady Motors and he (and the dyno) won't be available until the first weekend in April. How does that sound?

Jerry

If we get enough response from the membership, that's the day. So far only five people have indicated an interest. We would need about five more participants to make it worthwhile for Doug. Andy and Rachel Nelson may attend with their race cars, but don't know for sure if Rachel's car will be back together. Cross your fingers!

So far, that makes nine; Jerry, Ed, Chuck, Peter (2), Tim, Tim, Jim and Fat Mini. If you are planning on coming but haven't committed yet, please do so... I need to contact the Clover Leaf to make arrangements for pizza (ummm, pizza) and table space. This year we will try to make a run (low speed) through 5 Mile drive in Pt Defiance Park. There's a great spot with the bridges in the background for group photo.

I am planning to attend after all. No dyno run this year just for the fun. 5 mile drive is closed on Saturdays untill noon for foot/bike traffic, that's why we got stumped last time. So we might have to wast a bit more time before. Or go after lunch????

Hi guys, we have had some delays with getting the engine in #68 back together so we won't make the Dyno day :( Too bad, it would have been a blast.

Have fun and we will be looking for pictures on this site!

Looks like we'll have 9 - 10 cars. Doug said about $30 per run, 9-9:30 on Saturday 5 April. Wish that we had more participants. See you there. Anyone need directions?

Is this open to any make & model? Paul might be interested in pulling out his car, if you folks can handle an american muscle car tagging along.

As for my car, it's in the same condition it was in last month... We'll work on getting it road ready and legal (I need tabs).

Jerry
03-18-2008, 12:24 AM
As far as I'm concerned, bring the muscle. Probably will have to wait until the minis are finished, just for the sake of continuity in the set-up process. Oh, and I never miss the chance to have breakfast. So I'll be at the Denny's at 6th and Pearl about 8-8:15. Sure would be nice to have more participants in the dyno run, it's a lot of fun. I asked Doug what the price would be since we weren't having a ton of car-would $30 be ok? He said sure, what ever we wanted to pay, he just enjoys our cars and enthusiasm. I'm going to invite him to come along to the Clover Leaf afterwards. James had a good idea-to tour through Pt Defiance park after 1200. Let me know what you think about times so that I can confirm a place/time for us at the Leaf.

Don't know where all the particpants are; especially, all the hot dogs with the 1380s, Vtecs, and turbos. All talk!

And for everybody else, we've had all kinds of 998s and 848s run, too. In fact, I think I still hold the record for the least horsepower at a Dyno Day.

Don, screaming 848cc engine managed 27 hp at around 4800 rpm, and 33 lb.ft. of torque around 3100 rpm.

Tim, Jerry should chime in with directions shortly. Meeting us for breakfast?

I need to get a feel for when you want to eat pizza/drive through Pt. Defiance. The park doesn't open up for cars 'til 1200, so I'm thinking, with the number of cars that we'll have, the dyno run should be finished before noon. So, eat first, then Park or wait til after 1200 for the park to open and eat after. I need responses so that I can make arrangments at the Leaf.

Dixminion
03-27-2008, 04:58 AM
My vote is to eat first (always). Don

Line up of cars seems to be getting bigger, as well as the size of a couple of the cars that are supposed to be there.

Do the Dyno testing. Have a talk session after (like last year - most informative) with Doug's help, then eat (invite Doug), then drive.

I'm going to be out of town on the 5th but Barbara is going to try to make it. We would like to see the performance difference on a dyno run when the gearbox isn't trying to grind down the 1st motion bearing at the same time.

300 hp? so, he's already dynoed the car? or is that just the estimate? that would be fun to watch!

Hello,

I'd like to bring my Mini to the dyno day. This thread is a bit long and confusing on the date/times for this event. Could someone post the date/time and meeting points for this event? I will be coming from Bellevue and would like to drive down with some other Mini's if possible.

Thanks,
Chris

Hmm.. Chuck suggested I bring my gas/electric car rather than the Inno. Maybe I'll do that. What is the limit of people that would make this event reasonable?

Hi all,

I have my NEW Mini "Blue" to show off at the Dyno Day but can someone confirm the time? 9-9:30am is a bit rough for those of us that are almost an hour from Tacoma!! And is it just for that 30 minute window?? I would hope we could have more time as it must take at least 10 min per car. I am definitely in but cant get there until after 10:00am.

Hope to see you all soon!!

So last weekend I took my mini down to Chuck's garage to have him take a look at an oil leak, thought it would be a good idea to have that fixed before running it on the dyno! Well it seems that the oil leak is the least of my problems....ball joints, cv joint, tie rods, a left wheel bearing, and then it just started to sound more like... cha-ching, cha-ching! After talking it over with Chuck I made the move to a disc brake conversion and that should take care of most of the other problems...except the original oil leak. I hope to be able to show off all that "HP" from that mini 1000 next time.

OK, Deep breath. First of all, thanks for the response. If all can make it, looks we could have about twenty cars or so. Nice. OK, for those who can make it, meet for breakfast at Denny's (5924 6th Ave., Tacoma) at 0800. To get there from I-5, take the Hwy 16 exit towards the Narrows Bridge/Bremerton. 6th avenue exit (just past Cheney Stadium). Left turn onto 6th avenue at the T intersection, cross the next major intersection, which is Pearl street and Denny's will be right across the intersection on the left hand side. To get to Fairlady Motor's, same directions as above, EXCEPT, LEFT turn onto Pearl from 6th Avenue. Drive 6 blocks and turn RIGHT onto 12th (get into left lane) until reaching Mildred (Gas station on right, as a visual cue), then LEFT turn onto Mildred. Drive past Tacoma Community College, through 19th & Mildred intersection, get into right hand lane and follow Mildred to the right (it becomes 27th-if you think that's confusing to read, try writing it!). The new Post Office will be on the right and directly across the street (27th) is University Place Muffler. Turn left into the access driveway and drive about 1/8th mile. Doug's will be on the right. I'll also have my car parked in the parking lot for UP muffler, so watch for the TIC. Doug prefers cash, $30 per pull, and we should start about 0900.... I'll call the Leaf and tell them that we will be there about 1200 for pizza. Drive through Pt. Defiance w/photo op following eats. Hope that answers your questions. If not let me know. Oh, the date is Saturday, 5 April.
