and after this christmas, i can officially (and early) let everyone know that i will NOT be bringing home the big spender trophy again.

looking forward to seeing everyone there with your checkbooks in hand (or big wads of cash- yes, we still take that too) for the auction and regalia!! buy lots!

So, this will be my first White elephant event, so do tell, what is this Big Splendor Trophy? and another question this silent auction, is it for things that you may not know what they really are, in true white elephant style?

The silent auction is for items that will be on display until the end of the event. Bidders records their bids on a list for the item they are attempting to buy. When bidding closes the highest recorded bid wins the auction. These items are usually nice, desireable items that have been donated to the club from vendors or members.

The "out-loud" auction is for the "White Elephant" items. These items are all wrapped so the contents of the packages is a mystery. Also, some packages may be disguised as something else, good or bad! I have also seen cash hidden in some packages. Bidding for these items is just for fun. You never know what you will be getting. I have seen some "horse trading" taking place after the auction too!

Chuck has a definition of what should constitute a "White Elephant", he mentioned it at the December meeting but this might be a good place for a reprise.

I know what a White Elephant gift is, it is something that has value and it can be used or new, but it has value, is in good shape, and is just not valuable to the current owner. Or it's a re-gift situation from something you got for christmas that you are sure you didn't put in your letter to Santa.

My main question was about Dave's statement about the Big Splendor Award. Is that an actual award or is that just mini speak that I fell for, either answer makes perfect sense.

Big Spender Award is an actual award: a trophy that goes home with the winner...that is if the last winner remembers to bring it to the event!

Thank you! that's all I wanted to know. And just so you know, it won't be me either, but I do have quite a few things to donate.

This sounds like a really fun event! My husband and I would love to attend...one question, are children allowed or is it an adults only event? I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter who is great fun but I wouldn't want to be the only person who brings a toddler (she may try to steal a car or something!).

If no kids, I can get a babysitter for the day...thanks! I am really looking forward to meeting you all in a few weeks!!

Hi Ericah, Welcome to the wild world of Mini ownership.
To your question of children attending, Yes, definitely bring her with. This is a family affair. ( The only note being that the very large heated garage where the WE is held is not toddler proofed! - Haha )
We'll look forward to meeting you and your family and your car too!
Best regards,
MSH

Does George have a DVD player hooked up to the TV in the Garage? I have a copy of the 2007 Targa Newfoundland which runs 76 minutes, with primary coverage on Team #301 (the two Mini's and the Healey). I will bring it along for viewing pleasure if desired.

Cheers,

I think Dave B and I met up at the Super Mall last year, if I remember right.

It's nice when the question I was going to post has been asked and answered. My minis (kids 6 and 4) don't get far from my reach, and when they heard the word bar-be-que...'nuff said.
We'll be a bit late as the kids are training for the Olympic swim team, but we'll have the necessary White Elephant goodies.

My daughter is only 6...half the size and age of the others in her swim group. It won't be long before she completes the ten lesson gig. She's strong and graceful in the water. I need to get with it and fins a good local club. TSC, at this point, is too far away from us. When the time comes, if she is still interested in competing, she MIGHT swim for the mighty Rams at Wilson...or the Decatur Gators, the local school.
My son, on he other hand, well...

We could use a few extra tables and chairs. If you can bring a card table and some folding chairs, or the like, it would be appreciated.

Here are a few more photos from Saturday. The weather wasn't anything to write home about, but the auction and meeting were great fun.
