Hi Folks, It's that time of the year when we turn our attention to food and driving, "Food Drive" The date for the King 5 - Northwest Harvest food drive is December 5th 2009. The meeting place / weigh in will be at Gerber Collision & Glass in Bellevue. "Same place as last year"
The plan is to meet at 8am for the weigh in and leave around 8:45ish.
We are still planning 3 stops along the way so remember a bag or two per stop. Then to top it off we will go to a new place for lunch.
Now for the topper, shine up the minis and show up in numbers. I have been in contact with Evening Magazine and either Evening Magazine or King 5 would be interested in doing a story about our car club and our participation in the food drive.
The address is
Gerber Collision & Glass
13640 ne 16th
Bellevue, Wa.98005
ps. The first year we had about 1000 pounds and the second year was 1200 pounds....

Wow, at 1200 pounds, that's 1968 Dollars!!
I 'll come with out the wife and kid to fit more food!!
Eeek, 8 am in Bellevue,....hmm have to get the early ferry.
Excellent work, Tim, thanks for setting this up.
This is a very good cause. I'm gonna do my best to do this run, and encourage everyone else to do so also.
Best regards,
MSH

Can we start a head count as to how many people will be going on the "Food drive" so I can let the people know how many to expect for lunch.
Thanks much

I'm in, provided it doesn't snow or if my daughter is giving birth (Dec. 5th is her due date). She will most likely be at least a week early, I think, so count me in.

First of all, This club "Rocks"! At the end of last week I was beginning to think it was going to be "72 Norty" and Patti and me going on this years food drive. Then everyone started posting that they would be coming, and to top it off at last nights meeting Don Dixon suggested the club should donate a check to Northwest Harvest. That was an unexpected surprise and thank you to all the club members that made this possible.
This year Patti and I will be giving out a prize for the most weight and a friend who has an auto repair shop in Bellevue has also donated a gift too!
We look forward to seeing you all on the 5th of December for the King 5 / Northwest Harvest food drive.

hay Tim, put me for two to attend as well. :)
One for sure, or possibly two to attend; I'll have to wait and see.
I too am proud that our club has chosen to donate to such worthy cause, and always enjoy knowing that our club is doing good for charities each year during the Christmas holiday season.

Wouldn't miss this event unless we were forced to, great cause, fun drive, good people.
Actually looking forward to driving a Mini for the first time (for me) at this event. Figure at least one body, hopefully two.
Not sure yet but I think we have an event again later in the afternoon that prevents us from doing the lunch after, but maybe you can hold a place for two until we can solidify our plans.

I put it on the scale
3 Boxes 100 lbs..
I guess since bigshot is coming with the " pickup"
he will beat all of us.
What about if everybody weighting it at home, saving time??:)

If I remember correctly it was agreed at last meeting that everyone can weigh their donation at home and we'll use the "honor system" instead of doing the weigh-in when we meet up before the tour. Mr. Secretary?

I suggested self weighing as an option, figured some would, some wouldn't.

Ed's correct. At the last meeting, we decided members could weigh their contributions at home to save a little time before the drive. I'm sure Don's right, too. He did suggest the self-weigh thing. And I'm not sure, but I suspect Tim will have a scale there anyway.
Peter, the pickup has no real load-carrying advantage over any van or estate. Couple that with the fact that I'm really stingy (bah!), and the competition is still on.

Dan, Dan, Dan,
The pick-up has no roof over the payload bay. You can pile stuff on untill it tips over.

All your food drivers finished your pre-drive check out?
Checked oil, radiator, brake, clutch and dash pot fluid levels?
Checked the fan belt?
Checked tire pressure?
Checked that all your lights are working?
Checked that the batteries in your camera are charged?!

Answers to some questions, Yes please weigh your food donation and tell us how much and check in, Scouts honor!
Patti abd I will be bring a scale on Saturday for thouse of you that feel you have a little more room and make a last minute stop at the grocery store!
This year we are thinking of our south end members and the "Collection stops" will be Redmond, Northgate, and Auburn, with an awsome lunch in Renton.mmmmmm::yeah:
and lastly, Dan... if you put all the heavy food on the bottom and all the marshmallows on top you can stack as high as you want and shouldn't tip over ;)

Thanks for the advice, Tim, but the pickup doesn't have airbags, so I keep the marshmallows in the cab, duct-taped to the windscreen.
What routes are people taking from the south end to Bellevue? Just blastin' up 405?

The first year I was in London walking down Oxford st. and took some pics of a Mini in a display window [members pics/ bling Mini] while the club was doing the Food Drive. The second year my leg would not let me even try to get into a Mini let alone walk. This year it is very hard to bend at the knees, but I will try very hard to make this event. I'll mostlikely do Redmond and Northgate then head back home. So... one red Tartan, three bags of food, no lunch.

Dan, yes, just going up 405. Not many exciting routes from my house to the meeting site.
Dale, maybe have someone from one of the other cars play chauffeur for part of the trip so you can make all three stops and lunch.

What did you do today to make sure your Mini was ready for the trip?
I changed the oil and filter. Changed the fuel filter. Adjusted the rear brakes and hand brake. Lubed the suspension. Flushed the brake fluid. Tightened a loose exhaust mount. Topped up the coolant and checked the rest of the fluids and fan belt. Checked all the lights, and checked the air in all five tires.

Last weekend it was pointed out that I had a dead front turn signal / running light. It was beyond just a bulb, the socket was toast due to rust. Kelley brought me a replacement when he picked up the 998 lump thank you very much. The bounce had gone from the springs behind the contacts in Kelley's socket.
So what did I do today?
Worked a couple hours then headed to a meeting near Qwest field. My client was late so I used his tools to disassemble the socket. Blah blah blah with the client then headed home to paint the socket with galvanizing repair paint.
Tried to work but came up with an excuse to head up to the hardware store for replacement springs. The Ace dude thought the springs found in retractable pens would work but I shelled out the $4 for some with a corrosion resistant coating.
Returned home to work but spent an hour fitting the damn springs instead.
Got a couple more hours of actual work in before Marian got home. She had a late lunch so dinner could be postponed. I installed the socket and took the Mini out for an hour long "test drive" just to make sure the light worked.
So yes I've got front signals, the fluids are topped up and the air in the tires will be checked Friday. Let's go deliver some food!

today......I kicked all for tires to make sure they all had air. scraped the ice off the windows and drove it to work. Worked on a '57 Maserati engine, then ran a Ferrari Daytona to 146MPH on the roller dyno. Then drove the mini back home. Yesturday....checked all fluid levels. Varified engine timing, changed carb needle and re-set mixture.
Thanks for the reminder Chuck..it is a good idea to look you car over or have it looked over, if it's been sitting for a while.

Hey all,
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMINAL Time today!! First, Thanks very much to Tim and Patti Boyd for their work to set this up!
Some points which will need some verification later:
Congrats to Jerry and Noreen for the max weight this year of approx 220 lbs!
(You should have seen the back of the woody!)
The club donated approximately 1720 lbs of food to the NW Harvest collection sites, and of course, donated the $1000 check while at the Redmond collection site. ( We actually had texts coming thru while en route to Northgate that we'd been on the news already, very early in the day. )
It's very good to see the club doing good, especially these days. Way to go SAMOA members! I'm sure you'll all see the follow up after everyone gets home later. ( Had to bail after the Northgate collection site )
Best regards,
MSH

Pattie and Tim did a wonderful job.
Pattie will have to verify the total weight, but we certainly were over the Mini weight and on up into the ADO16 weight range.
Started with 17 Minis and 13 were still around for the food stop at the Cedar River Smoke House BBQ in Renton.
From the beginning, through the four stops and home I put on 90 miles and had one of the shorter routes.
Thanks to all for participating.

Well with a day to decompress and just reflect on the past few days all I can say is wow!
Patti and I have seen the post and we have watched the news and all I can say that a big hand goes out to everyone in this club. To recap on yesterday we had 17 minis with 30 members attending the food drive and donating a total of 1819 pounds. For those that were unable to make it we gathered in Bellevue, took attendance, ate some food, and passed out a few door prizes. Everyone got in their minis and we were off to our first stop at the Redmond Town Center, from there over Lake Washington to Northgate Mall, and the back in the minis and down south to a new drop off site in Auburn. There were 22 people that made their way to the Cedar River Smoke House in Renton for a great BBQ lunch.
This is not an event that happens by any one person and I would like thank everyone. Thank you to the club for the cash donation, thanks for all the pictures, thanks for bringing the minis out in force, and thank you Ed Sauer for the window plaques. Till next year.
