  • the right gas for your mini

    I was told to use
super unleaded in my Mini 1293 cc
is this correct,? or could I go with
    regular or unleaded or Ethanol
What are the difference between those. or it depends on your engine size?
Also considering Gas mileage and performing.

What's the compression ratio of the 1293?

Is the head made to take unleaded fuel?
The more I know about Minis, the more I know I don't know about Minis.

You can run 92 octane as found at regular gas stations.

Since you have an option of ethanol free gas on Vashon it's always the best choice. The ethanol in gas causes it to start breaking down as early as three weeks. The only time I use ethanol gas in my cars is when I will be going through the entire tank in less than a couple weeks or on road trips where ethanol free can't be found.

If you have had any head work, porting, polishing of the chambers or higher compression ratio you should be burning either mid or premium grade petrol (gasoline to the Yanks). I burn premium in mine, it tries to ping slightly on mid grade, you can fool with timing at the distributor to correct that, but will lose on the performance side.

I'm going by the rule of thumb learned from playing with our domestic engines, mostly small block Chevrolet. Where after you modify the engine, you try the same fuel it burned before, upping the octane/RON to the next higher grade if it either runs poorly or pings under load. So I can't see why a modified Mini engine would operate any differently as far as what fuel you feed it. Worked for me on everything from motorcycles to big cubic inch gasoline burning engines.

Insert added Blah, Blah, here: Peter, I didn't see you were running a 10:1 compression ratio, which is what mine's supposed to have too. You should be running Premium Fuel, it'll ping otherwise! If you need to check that out, find a hill and go up it in the highest gear that will pull you up at the lowest RPM range, either it will ping or it won't! If it does, you'll definitely hear it, like a hammer on metal!! Being that your head was modified they likely set it up for unleaded fuel. You can get the Lead additives if you need them or want to run some through the engine at places like Jeg's, Summit, Speedway Motors - all catalog vendors, who also carry the ZDDP oil additive as well, both are good additives to run through older designed engines, especially high performance types.
